Which boiler
Combi, system or regular? It depends on the house.
The right boiler depends on how many bathrooms you have, how many people want hot water at once, and what is already in the house. Anyone recommending one type without asking those questions is selling, not specifying.
Combi boiler
Heats water straight from the mains as you use it, so there is no hot water tank and no cold water tank in the loft.
Suits
One bathroom, a smaller household, and anyone who wants the airing cupboard back.
Watch out for
It serves one outlet properly at a time. Two showers running together will feel it.
System boiler
Heats water and stores it in a cylinder, without needing a tank in the loft.
Suits
Two or more bathrooms, and busy mornings where several people want hot water at once.
Watch out for
You need space for the cylinder, and stored hot water can run out after heavy use.
Regular boiler
The traditional setup, with a cold water tank in the loft feeding a hot water cylinder.
Suits
Older houses where the pipework is not up to mains pressure, or where keeping the existing layout makes sense.
Watch out for
Takes up loft and cupboard space, and changing away from it is a bigger job than a straight swap.
Before you accept a quote
What a proper installation should include.
Whoever you get quotes from, check these are in the price. A cheap quote usually leaves one or two out, and they are the bits that keep a new boiler running properly and its warranty valid.
- A proper look at the house and how you use hot water, before any price is given
- A boiler sized to the property, not the biggest model on the van
- Removal of the old boiler, itemised on the quote
- The heating system cleaned before the new boiler goes on, which most manufacturers require
- A magnetic filter on the system to catch sludge before it reaches the boiler
- Inhibitor added to the water to protect the system from the inside
- The condensate pipe run and protected so it is less likely to freeze in a cold snap
- Controls fitted, set up and shown to you
- The installation registered as a Gas Safe engineer is required to
- The manufacturer warranty registered in your name
